What does the Bible say about Heaven?

Do you ever really stop and think about Heaven? It’s an obsession for me. When I see all the bad things in the world, I long for the days when God will set things right!

My family has always been slightly unusual. We used to talk about death and Heaven at dinner time. My Dad would talk about the things he was looking forwards to in Heaven. We would wonder about what it would be like.

Nothing could prepare me for the day my Dad died, when I was only 15. But having a deep knowledge and awareness of Heaven certainly brought some comfort!

And now, I only have to look at the news to see the brokenness of the world: the inequalities, the unfairness… Won’t it be amazing when everything is made new again?

Do you know what the Bible actually says about Heaven?

The Bible tells us that Jesus loves us so much that he died so that we can live with him forever in heaven when we die! (John 3:16)

What the Bible says about Heaven:

  • Jesus said he is going to prepare a home for us (John 14:2; Heb 11:16)

  • In Heaven, there will be no more bad things ever (Rev 21:27)

  • There will be no pain, no tears, nor any kind of sadness (Rev 21:4)

  • We will get new bodies, and we will be made perfect (Heb 12:23; 1 Cor 15:42-44; Phil 3:21)

  • Jesus will give us rewards and crowns (1 Cor 3:12-14, 9:24-25; James 1:12, Matt 5:12, 16:27; 2 Tim 4:8; 1 Pet 5:4; Rev 2:10, 22:12)

  • There is a city made of gold and precious stones (Rev 21:11; Rev 21:18-21), with a street made of gold (Rev 21:21)

  • The river of life runs through the middle of the city (Rev 22:1)

  • By the river grows the tree of life (Rev 22:2) and the leaves of the tree are for healing the world! We will get to eat from the tree of life (Rev 2:7)

  • The gates of the city will never be shut (Rev 21:25)

  • There will be a joyful celebration and a feast! (Heb 12:22; Isaiah 25:6-9; Rev 19:9)

  • There will be people in Heaven from all over the world! (Rev 7:9, 21:24, 21:26)

Best of all, we will be reunited with God and enjoy living with him forever (Rev 21:3).

The world is full of sadness and brokenness, but Jesus has invited us all to come and live with him forever in this amazing place! To accept his free invitation, we have to admit that we have done things wrong (God calls this sin), and accept that we can only be right again through Jesus.
